Secret #1 – You Have to Get Your Mind Right
WE ARE A CHURCH, NOT A BUSINESS.
WE DON’T REALLY NEED TO CHANGE EVERYTHING, DO WE?
Every year, I speak with hundreds of church leaders all over the world who want to reach more people in their local community with the Gospel. They know the marketing tools are out there, but they don’t know the first thing about how to use them. And with the demanding and busy lifestyle of ministry, church leaders don’t have the time to teach themselves how to market their church. Maybe this sounds like you?
Marketing, advertising, sales funnels—these are all secular business terms. Large corporations and advertising agencies have spent countless hours studying exactly what works to compel someone to make a purchasing decision. I should know; I was one of them. I am the CEO and founder of Vibrant Agency, an international church media company. However, when I first started, I was working on the branding, online marketing, and sales funnels of corporate businesses. We quickly rose to be a national competitor in our industry using the exact principles outlined in this book, and now you get to put them to work for your church.
Those of us who are experienced in this industry can instantly tell when an ad is done by a professional, and when it is not. We know what will work, and what will not.
In marketing, there are principles that are game changers, and once you understand them, your church growth will never look the same.
More often than I want to admit, I get hate comments online from cranky Christians telling me that it is heresy to talk about marketing for churches. Just take a look at some of the comments I get on Facebook. However, what these cranky Christians don’t understand is that in the days that we are living in, digital marketing is a vital component to reaching others for the Gospel. The problem is, churches are getting it all wrong.
I cannot tell you how many times I have seen a church ad on social media or Google that is—simply put—a disaster. It pains me to see churches wasting their often limited resources on advertising campaigns that simply won’t work. And don’t even get me started on some of the branding I see.
Side note—please stop
downloading stock logo icons and slapping your church’s name on it.
GET YOUR MIND RIGHT.
It is time to start understanding that using every method possible to reach people is a mandate. If you are being passive and just hoping that people happen to wander through your sanctuary doors, I argue that you are not being faithful.
As a church leader, your motive is obviously different than a business owner. However, the very principles and strategies that we use in the
secular world to reach new customers are the same principles that can be used to reach people for Jesus. Instead of using advertising to make money, you want to use it to win your city for Christ. This is what we are called to do. And in this training, I am going to teach you exactly how to do it.
Everything my agency has learned over the past decade is now yours.
Most people who enter into vocational ministry do not have experience in branding or marketing. Obviously. And eventually they realize that it is important, so they try and figure it out on the fly. When they do it the wrong way, they end up wasting their resources on marketing campaigns that produce very little results.
Does this sound like anyone you know?
You don’t have to wait for people to walk through your doors to impact
them. Go meet them right where they are.
It was Jesus himself who used parallels to secular business methods when he was instructing his disciples. In Matthew chapter ten, he instructs them to go from city to city telling people the good news. Tradesmen would travel from city to city to sell their goods and livestock, but Jesus had the disciples do this same thing for the Gospel. It was the most effective way to spread the news. The motive changed, but the method was similar.
